photoThe University instituted the Department of Electronics in the year 1975. This is envisaged as a postgraduate Department with Master's Degree and Ph.D programmes in frontier fields of Electronics. The Department was inaugurated by Prof. M.G.K. Menon in 1975. Realising the growing needs of trained man-power in various fields of Electronics, the University decided to start teaching programmes in the Department, anticipating formal sanction and approval of the University Grants Commission, All India Council for Technical Education, etc. in due course. Initially, an M.Tech. course was started with a student strength of 6. Subsequently it was raised to 20 in the general category and 5 in the sponsored quota. In 1983, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) extended financial support to the M.Tech. course. The Doctorate Programmes of the Department are mainly in the fields of Underwater Acoustics, Ocean Electronics, Microwave Propagation & Antennas, Pattern recognition, Microprocessor Applications, Signal processing and Display Devices. External agencies like the Department of Science & Technology (Govt. of India), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), C.S.I.R., Atomic Energy Commission, Defence Research and Development Organisation and the State Government are supporting this Department through various Research projects and Research Fellowships. In 1990, the Department started M.Sc. degree course in Electronics co-sponsored by UGC and Department of Electronics (Govt. of India). In 1988, the University Grants Commission sanctioned COSIST assistance of Rs.57.86 lakhs to the Department for development of postgraduate education and research in the areas of Microprocessor Applications and Microwave Antennas. In 1993, the Department was selected by UGC for the Departmental Research Support (DRS) in the field of Ocean Electronics, with a financial assistance of about 60.00 lakhs for five years. In 1998, an additional financial assistance was sanctioned for Rs. 33.00 lakhs under DRS scheme for a period of 5 years. In 2005, DST selected this Department for financial assistance under their FIST Programme. An amount of Rs. 59.00 lakhs was sanctioned by DST for a period of 5 years. Sponsored projects are running in the Department for a total outlay of Rs.367.04 lakhs. Ministry of Human Resources Development has given assistance for Rs.75.00 lakhs for establishing an advanced VLSI Laboratory and Signal Processing Laboratory in this Department. Recently the University Grants Commission has also given Rs.20.00 lakhs specifically for creating for infrastructural facilities in this Department. UGC has also sanctioned 5 separate Research Fellowships namely Research Fellowship for Meritorious Students (RFMS) to this Department. The technical biasing of the University, spectacular growth of Electronics industries in Kerala and the location of the University in the industrial zone of the State are all favourable aspects for hope of substantial development of this Department.
